The Period of Purple Crying is a prevention program designed to educate all parents, whether first-time parents or parents of other children, about coping with the stressors of their baby's first months of life. It is a vital educational program being implemented to reduce the incidence of abusive head trauma resulting from a child being shaken by their care provider. All hospitals in the state of Oklahoma that deliver babies are encouraged to participate in the program.
The program consists of a DVD (provided by OSDH) given to parents of all babies delivered within a participating hospital. The DVD explains normal crying behaviors of newborns/infants and safe ways caregivers may cope during periods of unconsolable infant crying.
