This is a historic new era for medical care with the recent announcement that OU Medical Center, the state's largest hospital, and Edmond Medical Center, the only full service hospital located in Edmond, plan will create one hospital under the OU Medical Center license.  The Edmond facility will be re-named OU Medical Center Edmond.  This new relationship will bring an immediate investment of $17 million dollars in facility updates to Edmond with the possibility of more expansions in the future.

OU Medical Center is unique among hospitals in the state because it represents a successful public and private relationship. Bringing Edmond Medical Center into this relationship creates the opportunity to provide additional advanced health care services in a compassionate community hospital setting.

"OU Medical Center and Edmond Medical Center have always enjoyed a very strong relationship," said Cole Eslyn, President and Chief Executive Officer, OU Medical Center.  "The joining of these two hospitals will bring to the citizens of Edmond all the benefits of a large tertiary hospital with the feel of a community hospital.  Health care in Edmond will become even stronger."

Edmond Medical Center to Become OU Medical Center Edmond

New OU Medical Center Edmond
Edmond's population growth outpaces the region by four percent annually. This rapid expansion creates an increased need for medical services, particularly in family medicine, emergency services, and obstetrics as more young families move to the area.  As Edmond's only full services hospital, Edmond Medical Center is in a unique position to provide for this growing need.  Its rich history in the community began 63 years ago with the commitment to provide the finest in family medicine to Edmond's citizens. By joining with OU Medical Center, the Edmond facility will be enhanced to provide more services that are important to Edmond's growing families, including a Women's Center of Excellence and the re-introduction of a Labor and Delivery department.  There have been no obstetric services in Edmond since 2005 for the estimated 1725 pregnant Edmond residents each year.

Also included in the Women's Center of Excellence will be:

  • access to OU Medical Center's high-risk obstetrics team
  • gynecologic services, including gynecologic oncology services
  • breast surgery
  • diagnostic and therapeutic imaging

Edmond Medical CenterOther improvements to OU Medical Center Edmond include the enhancement and renovation of the existing surgical floors along with the purchase of new operating room equipment and diagnostic imaging machines.

The Edmond Emergency Department, which treats around 21,000 patients per year, will receive renovations and expansions including a new registration area and the addition of two fast track rooms and an additional treatment room.  When construction is completed, the Emergency Department will increase from 10 to 13 rooms to meet the growing emergency needs of Edmond.

There are plans for the expansion of both primary care and specialized medicine services offering more Edmond residents convenient access to the best in health care close to home.

The combined OU Medical Center campuses will allow patients more choices and greater flexibility in choosing their medical provider.  One big advantage for young Edmond families will be increased access to the world-class pediatric and high risk obstetrics care offered at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center.

Long-term plans call for expansion of services outside of the OU Medical Center Edmond campus and the growth of services in other areas of Edmond through additional construction and physician recruiting in both surgical and non-surgical specialties to accommodate the rapid geographic and population expansion of the region.

In 2008, Edmond Medical Center contributed more than 27 million dollars to the local economy. With the projected increase in services and patients at the new, enhanced facility, the hospital's tax base will continue to be a cornerstone for the Edmond economy.  With the addition of obstetrical and other services at the new OU Medical Center Edmond, there is potential for job growth in a number of clinical areas.
