Volunteers
It takes a unique group of individuals to volunteer - people who are willing to give of themselves and their time to benefit the lives of others.
At OU Medical Center Edmond, our members come from all walks of life and are valued members of our medical team. Their responsibilities range from transporting patients and delivering flowers to providing directions.
Our History
The OU Medical Center Edmond Auxiliary was organized in 1967 with 56 charter members. The organization was developed with the purpose of cultivating friendly relations and promoting mutual understanding between the patients and hospital staff.
Application Guidelines
An application must be completed and turned in to the switchboard, the information desk or membership chairman.
Orientation
All volunteers must complete six hours of orientation on Hospital guidelines, procedures and safety issues. Additional on-the-job training is furnished in related volunteer areas.
Health Screen
A TB screening is mandatory for all volunteers and will be performed at the hospital's expense. Hepatitis vaccines, while not mandatory, are offered at no cost to volunteers.
Dues
An active membership is 50 hours of service annually.
Benefits
Uniforms
Women are provided with one pink smock. Men will provide their own pink shirt. Members are expected to provide their own white skirt, slacks and comfortable, soft-soled shoes.
Meals
Volunteers are eligible for one free meal during a four-hour shift. The volunteer must be in uniform and wearing their hospital name tag.
Training
Training for each area of service is provided to the volunteer by the volunteer coordinator, hospital staff, or another volunteer.
Parking
Volunteers can park in the employee parking lot south of the hospital.
Areas of Service
Information Desk
Volunteers greet visitors, answer phones and perform other duties as needed. Volunteers should possess basic computer knowledge. Volunteers also assist registration; deliver flowers and mail, transport patients and or escort visitors to appropriate areas.
Gift Shop
Through good customer service, volunteers sell merchandise and assist with pricing and displaying of items.
Outpatient Surgery
This morning shift requires volunteers to assist staff as needed with errands, changing bed linens, preparing coffee and updating family on patient status.
Radiology
This volunteer position assists radiology staff with filing and running interdepartmental errands.
Medical Records
This volunteer position helps with numeric and alpha collating. They assist with putting stickers on charts as necessary.
Autumn Life
This volunteer position assists staff with patients assigned to Autumn Life area.
Blood Pressure Screening
Volunteers take complimentary blood pressure readings on Monday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. in the hospital main waiting area. The volunteers use an automated machine and record the customer's reading.
