Why OU Medicine?

Dual Degrees

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, College of Public Health, and the Graduate College are offering an innovative degree program that reflects students' interdisciplinary interests. Individuals pursuing the dual degrees would be prepared to practice medicine and compliment that practice with health administration and policy expertise, health promotion and education at the community level, health care and management of occupationally- or environmentally-related diseases and injuries and/or the investigation or application of biostatistics and epidemiology.

Degrees Offered
The medical degree (MD) is a traditional four-year program with two years of basic sciences, two years of clinical education and a longitudinal focus on physician - patient relationships. There are several master's level programs offered by the College of Public Health: a non-thesis Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, the Master of Health Administration (MHA), and the Master of Science (MS) degree in epidemiology or biostatistics. These degrees are offered in five areas of concentration including Health Administration and Policy, Health Promotion Sciences, Occupational and Environmental Health, Biostatistics, and Epidemiology.

Proposed Pathways
Each student accepted to the dual degree program may proceed with degree requirements in an individualized manner constrained only by the course offerings of the programs. All degree requirements for the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health and Graduate College must be completed. It is suggested that the student begin the College of Medicine curriculum, complete year 1, take six semester hours in the College of Public Health, complete the second year in medical school, sit for the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 in June of the second year, then fully enroll in the College of Public Health course requirements. After completion of the course requirements, the students may re-enter the College of Medicine to complete the clinical rotations of the third year and required fourth year courses.

The Campus
The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, including the Graduate College, Colleges of Public Health and Medicine, are among a remarkable group of health-related institutions on the 200-acre campus in central Oklahoma City. The College of Medicine - Tulsa is a community-based, clinical campus that is uniquely focused on primary-care medical training. Evening coursework is also available in Tulsa in support of the Master of Public Health degree. Outstanding research training opportunities exist in research-oriented departments and in interdisciplinary research centers.

The Faculty
The faculty are prominent in many areas of basic biomedical research and public health and are skilled mentors providing support and guidance to students.
