Research Description:
Extracranial tumor in children: This study is to understand the comprehensive and multi-directional mechanistic orchestration and downstream dual action response of Rel proteins after therapeutic interventions in neuroblastoma. The aim is to delineate the molecular signaling involved in neuroblastoma relapse and dissemination to distant sites in response to radiotherapy. Further, this study will identify the efficacy of novel synthetic monoketones in mitigating this radio-response signaling and metastasis using appropriate animal models. Moreover, this study will develop and employ real-time tumor (in this case, neuroblastoma) targeted delivery modalities that could eventually be translated to the clinics.
Breast Cancer: 1) This study investigates the influence of transcriptional regulation involved in breast cancer cell survival advantage and metastasis in distant sites. Further, this study will identify and employ the combinatorial synergistic effect of known bioactive nutraceuticals in both prevention and treatment of breast cancer using a more relevant orthotopic breast tumor mouse model. 2) This study investigates mechanism of nitric oxide signaling pathway upon clinical doses of radiation exposure in endothelial cells that are grown in their micro-environmental conditions and subjected to physiological shear stress. This study utlilizes non-tumorigenic or tumorigenic co-culture approach and explores the etiology of cancer after low dose radiation exposure, that should shed light on the mechanisms that mediate tumorigenesis, re-growth and metastasis after radiotherapy.
Pancreatic Cancer: This study delineates the molecular orchestration involved in stem cell characteristic transition and self renewal propensity and, their regulation in pancreatic carcinogenesis and progression. Further this study elucidates the potential of multiple dietary supplements in targeting stem cell characteristic transition and self renewal propensity in human pancreatic cancer stem cells and pancreatic carcinogenesis as such, using transgenic mouse model of spontaneous pancreatic tumor. Other Research: Radiation carcinogenesis; Radiation bystander effects; Radiation inflammation – counter measure for bio-terrorism; Low-dose radioprotection; Hyperthermia as adjuvant treatment modality for breast cancer; chemoprevention of prostate cancer; tobacco carcinogenesis etc.
