Pediatric Medical Services Unit

The Children's Hospital - 8th floor, Rooms 8102-8180 [  Map ]

Pediatric Medical Services at The Children's Hospital are specialized just for children. Equipment is designed for pediatric patients, and treatments and procedures are not done in the child's room unless absolutely necessary. This helps a child feel as safe as possible when they are in their room.  Now that we're in a new facility, all patients have private rooms.

Parents are included in all aspects of their child's care, and are encouraged to provide any portion of the care they are comfortable with and capable of providing.

Child Life specialists work as part of the medical team to promote optimal child development and minimize the stress of hospitalization.  In an effort to promote a positive learning experience for children, Child Life specialists facilitate coping and adjustment in circumstances that might otherwise be overwhelming.  They use medical play dolls and explain medical procedures in language children can understand.  In addition Child Life provides therapeutic play to help children express emotion, resolve distress, and facilitate coping during hospitalization.  Learn more about The Child Life Department.

Upon discharge, parents are carefully instructed on the use of any special equipment or medications they might need for their child, and follow-up appointments with the appropriate physicians are planned.
