Our 501(C)(3)'s Mission Statement
The Children's Hospital Volunteers is an organization committed to improving the lives of children in Oklahoma. This support is focused on the patients, families and visitors of the children and women's services at OU Medicine.
Volunteer Opportunities volunteers provide needed support to families. These first faces help anxious families to find their way, during highly stressful times. Their gifts of comfort and direction are truly appreciated.
-
Patient Pals assist in providing play activities to meet the social and emotional needs of the hospitalized child. Patient Pals visit children in their rooms and help to staff unit playrooms.
-
Waiting Area & Escort volunteers provide needed support to families. These first faces help anxious families to find their way, during highly stressful times. Their gifts of comfort and direction are truly appreciated.
-
Wishing Well Gift Shop volunteers help visitors shop and select items; all proceeds benefit the patient projects of the volunteer group.
-
Toy Cart volunteers visit each new patient in the hospital and allow them to pick a toy or game to keep. It's a nice, fun surprise for children, and eases the stress of the hospital environment.
-
Surgery Waiting Area volunteers provide information to families while their children are in surgery.
-
Stitch of Love Sewers provide booties, blankets, small pillows and medical play dolls - a great opportunity for group participation.
-
NICU Cuddlers provide special care to newborns through rocking and the power of a soft touch. Volunteers must be 25 years of age. As this is one of the most popular requests, we ask that volunteers try out another opportunity before becoming a cuddler or be patient as all spots may be filled.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be 18 years of age and willing to commit to volunteering three hours a week for one year. Our greatest need for volunteers is Monday-Friday during workday hours. At this time, there are no weekend positions available.
All applicants are required to have an individual interview. Once accepted, the volunteer is required to complete a drug and health screening, background check and training to prepare them for their volunteer position. All requirements are provided by the hospital at no cost to the volunteer. This process may take four to six weeks to complete.
A Junior Volunteer program is available for those 16-18 years of age. The program is ongoing 12 months a year and applicants selected are required to commit to one year and 100 hours of service. The Junior Volunteers have the opportunity to serve several times a week in the summer and during the school year shift times are available after school, evenings and weekends. Volunteers are required to complete the health screening and new volunteer orientation. The program provides support services to patients and families.
Please call (405) 271-4870 or email glenna.hoke@hcahealthcare.com to request a volunteer application packet.
