What is Pain Management?
There are many different causes of pain from broken bones, headaches, illness, surgery, or even having blood drawn. When it comes to treating pain, children have different needs than adults, which is why we have a team specifically trained to handle children's unique needs. We believe the most effective way to treat pediatric pain is by approaching the pain from several disciplines. The OU Children's Pediatric Pain Management Team includes anesthesiologists, a pediatric pain nurse practitioner, pharmacists, pediatric psychologist, physical therapists, and child life specialists. By using all the members of our team to work together to treat children, pain can be adequately and successfully controlled.
Remember: It is important to anticipate pain and have a plan in place to relieve it. Uncontrolled pain slows the healing process and can eventually lead to chronic pain. Continuous pain can create a feeling of helplessness and can prevent your child from participating in everyday, normal activities.
Our Mission
To improve the lives of children suffering from acute and chronic pain by effectively treating pain through the use of quality, compassionate care based on the latest medical research.
Who We Are
We believe that the best way to treat a child suffering from pain is to treat the ENTIRE child, which means not just caring for his/her physical well-being, but his/her emotional, psychological, and mental well-being as well. Because of this, we approach treatment from several disciplines by using the full resources of our highly-trained Pediatric Pain Management Team. Our team is here to treat children by providing medical, pharmacological, and psychological services through the use of research, education, advocacy, and setting standards of care. Meet the team.
