Undergraduate Program

The faculty of the Department of Pathology encourages in medical students and other health professionals the free pursuit of learning and independence of mind, while holding before them the highest scholarly and professional standards. The faculty members endeavor to provide the proper role models as intellectual guides and counselors, defining the objectives, academic conduct, and expected performance of all students, no matter their area of study. The faculty adheres to the guidelines of the College of Medicine in the pursuit of academic excellence. The faculty directs and participates in three major courses in the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Curriculum.

Introduction to Human Illness (INDT 8090; 344 contact hours) - Taught in collaboration with the Department of Medicine, this course is presented primarily for sophomore medical students, but also enrolls students from the College of Dentistry (for approximately 25 contact hours). The objective of the course is to provide the students with a better understanding of "disease" and how diseases impinge on normal body function to create the noted clinical signs, symptoms, and abnormalities in laboratory data. The course is designed to present an integrated package of lecture and small group discussions which will incorporate the necessary information and skills to allow the students to function competently in their third year clerkships. The course runs through both the fall and spring semesters and is directed by the Department of Pathology.

Core Pathology (AHE 4433; 45 contact hours) - This is a survey course presented during the spring semester to the Physical Therapy students, Occupational Therapy students, and Radiologic Technology students in the College of Allied Health (on both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa campuses) and the Physician Associate students in the College of Medicine. This currently involves approximately 200 students.

Applied Principles of Pathology (PATH 5503; 45 contact hours) - This is a clinically oriented survey course presented during the fall semester to students in the College of Nursing's Masters Degree Nurse Practitioner program, Special Education program, and general graduate program. This course is also linked to sites in Tulsa, Enid, Woodward, Lawton, and Ada.

Additionally, the Department sponsors student electives in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, forensic pathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, clinical microbiology, and special studies.  Visit our page on Careers in Pathology.
