Bicycle Safety

Summer is here! It is a great time for riding bikes and having fun outdoors. If you're out riding your bike this summer, make sure you're wearing a helmet!  We created the Helmets & Heroes program to encourage you to always wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle.  Helmets & Heroes is a summer bicycle safety program of the Trauma One Center at OU Medicine in partnership with OKBlitz.com, Braum's, OKC Redhawks, the Metro Area Traffic Safety Council (MATSC) and Kohl's Road Campaign - a program of The Children's Hospital Volunteers.

Through Labor Day, area police departments that are part of MATSC will be handing out "tickets" to bicyclist who they see wearing helmets.  The tickets (coupons) are good for prizes.  You can redeem the coupon for a free ice cream at any area Braum's Ice Cream store and go to the Web address listed on the coupon to register for a chance to win free tickets to an Oklahoma City Redhawks baseball game.  The OKC Redhawks tickets will be for their game on September 5, 2010.  Winners will be drawn from all those register on the OU Medical Center Web site.  At the September 5 game of the OKC Redhawks, there will be a bike rodeo, drawings for free bicycles, bike helmet give-away and other fun activities.  You can also register to win a Dean Blevins and Coach Bob Stoops autographed football helmet at the OKBlitz.com Web site.
