About Becky

Becky Mannel has 12 years of experience providing evidence-based training in lactation and breastfeeding to health care professionals from around Oklahoma and internationally. As a faculty member at OUHSC and Lactation Coordinator at OU Medical Center, she has developed a variety of curricula from a half-day basic orientation course to a 2-day course taught to numerous Children First nurses. Becky has lectured to physicians, residents and medical students and provides regular medical student lectures. She developed a month-long elective rotation in lactation for Pediatric residents which was formally approved by the ACGME Pediatric Residency Review Committee. Becky collaborated with Oklahoma State Department of Health/WIC to develop the WIC Clinical Lactation Preceptorship which continues annually at OU Medical Center. She has recently overseen the first formal clinical training in Oklahoma for aspiring lactation consultants, a 6-month program approved by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Becky has presented at state, national and international professional conferences numerous times and her education courses have been attended by a wide variety of health care professionals including nurses, physicians, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, childbirth educators and lactation consultants.

Activities in her profession of lactation consulting include 6 years on the board of directors for the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), serving the last 2 as President. Becky currently serves as Treasurer on the board of directors for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, the certification body for lactation consultants. She has published a number of articles on breastfeeding and lactation with a particular focus on hospital lactation management and leadership. Becky is also lead editor of ILCA's Core Curriculum for Lactation Consultant Practice, 2nd edition, and is currently working on the 3rd edition, due out in 2012.

More recently Becky has been honored to be invited to represent lactation consultants at some national level meetings, including development of the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding, 2011, and two national strategy meetings sponsored by the US CDC in 2010. She is excited to be involved in the Oklahoma Hospital Breastfeeding Education Project as she knows hospitals have a huge impact on our breastfeeding families.
