Russell G. Postier, M.D., assumed the position of Interim Dean of the OU College of Medicine on February 6, 2017.
Postier completed his undergraduate education at Oklahoma State University and earned his medical degree from the OU College of Medicine in 1975. He began his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, completing his training in 1980. After finishing his residency, he spent one year as Assistant Chief of the Surgical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
In 1981, Postier returned to Oklahoma and joined the faculty of the OU College of Medicine. His practice has focused on gastrointestinal surgery, with a special interest in the biliary tract and pancreas. From 1983 to 1997, he served as director of the surgery residency program. Following that, in 1997, Postier was appointed the John A. Schilling Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. In 2010, he was named a David Ross Boyd Professor.
Postier has been active in several professional societies, including leadership roles with the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery, the Southwestern Surgical Congress, and the American Surgical Association. He has been active as an educator and a mentor, and in 2002, he received the Stanton L. Young Master Teacher Award. He also has conducted research, both basic science and clinical, focused on improved therapeutics for pancreatic cancer.
