RESIDENT ROTATIONS

PGY-1

The PGY-1 year includes rotations with Trauma Surgery (2 months), ENT (1 month), Neuro-ophthalmology (1 month), Neuroradiology (1 month), Neuro-anesthesia (1 month), Neurology ICU (3 months), and Neurosurgery (3 months). 

During the PGY-1 rotations, the residents develop the clinical skills required for exceptional care of neurosurgical patients. They will also the learn to perform bedside neurosurgical procedures as well as the develop basic surgical skills in the OR. The residents will also be incorporated into the in-house call pool during the year.

PGY-2

The PGY-2 year consists of one year as the junior resident on the OUMC Adult Neurosurgery Service. Working under the supervision of the Chief Resident and the full-time faculty, the residents will receive exposure to the full range of neurosurgical care. They assist in operations, record patient histories, and perform physical examinations on all patients admitted to the Neurosurgery Service. They also manage the inpatient care for all neurosurgery patients under the supervision of the Chief Resident and full-time faculty. Residents take in-house call every 5th to 6th night on average and follow all duty-hour guidelines.

PGY-3

The PGY-3 year consists of six months as the junior operative resident on the OUMC Adult Neurosurgery Service and six months of elective/research. The focus of the PGY-3 year is a transition to more independence in patient care both inside and outside the OR. Residents are expected to develop skills for independent evaluation of patients, surgical planning and execution, and post-operative care. Residents take in-house call every 5th to 6th night on average and follow all duty-hour guidelines.

PGY-4

The PGY-4 year consists of six months on The Children’s Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgery Service and six months of elective/research. Residents take in-house call every 5th to 6th night on average and follow all duty-hour guidelines.

PGY-5

The PGY-5 year consists of nine months as the senior operative resident on the OUMC Adult Neurosurgery Service and three months of elective/research. Together with the Chief Resident and faculty, they are responsible for overseeing the Adult Service and supervising the junior residents. Residents are expected to continue to develop their surgical skills, especially in more complex neurosurgery procedures. Residents will take senior/home call on average every 3rd or 4th night. During this year, they are required to take the ABNS written exam for credit.

PGY-6

The PGY-6 year consists of one year as the Chief Resident on the OUMC Adult Neurosurgery Service. During this time, residents are responsible for supervision of the Adult Neurosurgery Service, including overseeing the junior residents, under the guidance of the attending staff while engaging in a substantial operative experience. Residents evaluate, treat medical or surgical, and make surgical recommendations to patients. They will hone their decision-making and surgical skills and are expected to be able to plan and carry out all surgical procedures. They also evaluate and discuss surgical findings and associated surgical complications, including presentations at the monthly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) Conference. Residents will take senior/home call on average every 3rd or 4th night.

PGY-7

The PGY-7 year consists of one year of elective dedicated to the resident’s area of interest, including possible enfolded fellowship. Residents will take senior/home call on average every 3rd or 4th night.
