PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic, clinically diverse autoimmune disease with dysregulated pathophysiology highlighted by elevated interferon levels. A main hallmark is a loss of tolerance to self-antigens leading to increased level of autoantibodies prior to disease symptoms. However, up to 20% of healthy female individuals are also ANA+, and most will never develop clinical autoimmune disease. We hypothesize that mechanisms either controlling autoimmunity or predisposing cells to activation will be identified in ANA+ healthy control subjects compared to non-autoimmune (ANA- healthy controls) or actively autoimmune (SLE) subjects. The project is focused on characterizing impact of SLE associated variants on particular pathways.
