PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) is the fifth most cause of cancer deaths among women in the Western world. Although initial response to platinum therapy are good, most patients with advanced EOC will develop drug resistance and consequent shortened survival. Our lab has shown that an H2S producing enzyme, cystathionine beta synthase (CBS), an enzyme utilized by bacteria as a defense against antibiotics, is also exploited by ovarian cancer in the development of chemoresistance. We postulate that CBS promotes chemoresistance via metabolic rewiring and alterations in mitochondria dynamics. Therefore, we propose that CBS could be a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of ovarian cancer and other cancer types.
