Summer 2004 - Research Project

Terrell Swanson

Title of Project

Effects of clioquinol on NFKB activity and tissue factor expression in tumor cells

Faculty Mentor

Stuart Lind, MD

Terrell has three objectives for his project: 1) to explore the expression of antioxidant enzymes (specifically superoxide dismutasae-1, superoxide dismutase-2, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) in tumor cells; 2) to determine how antioxidant enzyme expression and activity is affected by n-3 PUFA; 3) to inhibit production of these antioxidant enzymes using siRNA and determine if loss of one enzyme leads to increased sensitivity of tumor cell lines to n-3 PUFAs.

Akinkunle Owoso

Title of Project

Comparison of Angiogenic markers in Alzheimer's Disease

Faculty Mentor

Paula Grammas, PhD

Akinkunle plans to study AD and normal brain microvessels to look for expression of other commonly found angiogenic markers; these include integrins, matrix metalloproteinases, vascular endothelial growth factor, angiopoietins, and thrombin.
