Conferences & Courses

Available conferences for fellows to attend include formal didactic coursework, research conferences, clinical conferences, journal clubs, and chart reviews.

Didactic Coursework

Endocrine Themes

  • The goal of this monthly session is to prepare fellows for board certification. The content is guided by the published American Board of Pediatrics core curriculum for Pediatric Endocrinology. Over the course of three years, the fellows are exposed to a wide range of common and rare topics covering basic and clinical endocrinology.

Professional Development Lunch

  • This monthly lunch meeting offered to all fellows in the Department of Pediatrics covers topics on professional development such as patient safety, teaching and mentoring, grant writing, ethics, communication skills, and more.

Board Review

  • This weekly session is led by junior faculty who have recently taken the Pediatric Endocrinology Boards and the fellows. The group reviews major endocrine themes and does sample questions and tests.

Journal Club

  • Journal Club occurs quarterly. Each fellow is assigned a journal club; therefore, they complete about 2 journal clubs per year. The fellow presenting journal club meets with the faculty advisor to select  two clinically relevant articles to review centered around a central theme i.e. adrenal pathology. The fellow will create a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the key findings of the article then provide an analysis of the manuscript.

Introductory Curriculum to Multidisciplinary Care Model

  • Series of educational lectures are provided by our diabetes educators and endocrine nurses to thefirst year fellow to educate them on various roles played by these differing health care providers in taking care of our patients.

Research Conferences

Metabolic Research Conference

  • Hosted and led by the Children's Metabolic Research Institute, this bi-monthly conference covers in-depth topics in basic science research, specifically in the field of pediatric endocrinology.  Fellows will make a presentation at this conference each year.

Fellows Scholarly Curriculum

  • This curriculum introduces the fellows to various research techniques we have available in our section and also reinforces the “core knowledge in scholarly activities” content of the ABP core content.

Lab Meeting

  • Research lab meeting occurs weekly among a group of faculty and fellows that utilize cell, biochemistry, and molecular biology methods in their projects. The group works cohesively to discuss progress, interpret results, and troubleshoot procedures, and plan additional experiments and techniques.

Clinical Conferences

Weekly Clinical Meeting

  • Each week, the faculty and staff meet to discuss the inpatient consults and admits for the week as well as any other relevant announcements, clarifications, etc.

Clinical Case Conference

  • Case Conference takes place monthly and is a forum for the providers to discuss any difficult or interesting patients they have seen and get input and feedback from the group.

Pediatric Grand Rounds

Continuity Clinic Meeting

  • Fellows meet weekly with their continuity clinic attending to discuss difficult or interesting patients seen in their continuity clinics.

Clinical Care Meeting

  • Each month, all attending pediatric endocrinologists, fellows, clinical team members and students meet to discuss clinical care issues.  New landmark studies, new diabetes or endocrine products (i.e. pumps, sensors) and patient delivery issues are examples of topics reviewed by the multidisciplinary team.  Topics are reviewed and discussed to determine if the program should incorporate products into current diabetes and endocrine patient care practices, establish policies for such or edit current practice procedures.
