Bone Marrow

Chromosome analysis of bone marrow can confirm hematological disorders such as AML or CML. It can also be used to monitor the prognosis of the patient during their cancer treatment and to identify any re-occurrence of cancer. To submit a specimen for genetic studies please follow the guidelines listed below.

Collect 3-5 ml of bone marrow aspirate in a heparinized syringe. For transport the specimen may be transferred to:a sodium heparin tube, a tube with no additives, or a container with RPMI media. Fresh specimens must be kept at room temperature, do not freeze. Please record the most recent white blood cell count and a reason for study on the requisition form. Before shipping, write the patient's name on the container the specimen is to be transported in.
