Connexin 30 Sequencing Early Childhood Hearing Loss

Connexins are proteins that form channels to allow transport of molecules between cells. Proteins connexin 26 and connexin 30 interact to form a channel that functions in the inner ear. The GJB6 gene, located near GJB2, encodes the protein connexin 30. If a patient has nonsyndromic hearing loss they could be a candidate for tesing.

We perform sequencing of the entire coding region of GJB6 gene as well as testing for the common deletion found in connexin 30. We recommend that an individual first be tested for the most common mutation in the GJB2 gene. If nothing is found our office will contact the referring physician to discuss reflex testing to GJB6.
