Dr. Sekar obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Madras. He did his Pediatric Residency and Neonatology Fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC. He has been the Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at OU Medical Center for twenty-five years prior to his appointment as the Interim Chief of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Section in June 2017.

Dr. Sekar started his research career in the Fetal Physiology Laboratory working with pregnant ewes. He was investigating fetal breathing and how they react to maternal medications. Subsequently he worked on lamb models of pulmonary hypertension and studied the effects of adenosine analogs. He later switched his interest to clinical research focusing on pulmonary physiology and infant breathing. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials as follows:  the center PI for bovine  and porcine surfactant trials prior to its FDA approval in the US, two major clinical trials of inhaled Nitric Oxide both in term and preterm infants sponsored by the NIH, trial of  the environmental exposure of inhaled nitric oxide in the NICU and the PICU settings, surfactant pharmacoeconomic studies and the head cooling trial for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and the comparison trial of non- invasive ventilation (NIPPV) with CPAP. He was the first investigator to use inhaled nitric oxide in neonatal resuscitation. He is currently involved in a synthetic surfactant trial and Sildenafil trial in PPHN.

Dr. Sekar is the founder and Director of the Pediatric Sleep Laboratory at OU Medical center, which performs over one thousand studies in Children per year.

Dr. Sekar has published in all the major journals in Pediatrics. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Perinatology and the Guidelines Committee of the Neonatal Perinatal Medicine subcommittee of the American Academy of Pediatrics.   He is a member of the Academic Pediatric Society. He has been conferred Honorary Professor by two major Chinese universities. He is a visiting professor at Fudan University, Shanghai, China. He was the Chair of the Thesis committee at third Medical University, Chongqing, China. He is an invited faculty to international Surfactant Meetings in Europe.
