Research Emphasis

My research is focused on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II molecules.  These molecules trigger immune responses that result in:

  • The rejection of organ and bone marrow transplants.
  • The targeting of tumor cells for immune destruction.
  • Autoimmune responses such as diabetes and arthritis.
  • Immune responses to vaccines against viruses and tumors.

Laboratory research support comes does and has come from several sources including the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, the National Marrow Donor Program, OCAST, PHF, commercial enterprises, and the Medical Alumni Association.

Unique aspects of my research have been commercialized to form the biotechnology company Pure Protein LLC.  I am Chief Scientific Officer of Pure Protein which is located at the Research Park on the OUHSC campus.  The overall goal of my scientific endeavors is to utilize class I and class II molecules to stimulate beneficial immune responses and to modulate deleterious immune responses.

Clinical

As of September 2003, my laboratory is CLIA and ASHI accredited for DNA high resolution typing of HLA for clinical transplantation.  We intend to become involved in the matching of Oklahoma transplant recipients and donors.  Furthermore, we intend to compete for research studies that require clinical laboratory accreditation.
