​Meet Medical Director, Dr. Jeffrey Bender

jeffrey-s-benderDr. Jeffrey Bender is the founder and medical director of the OU Physicians Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive and Hernia Surgery. As a professor and vice chair of the Department of Surgery for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Dr. Bender has a wealth of knowledge and experience in minimally invasive surgical techniques. His expertise in hernia repair has gained him renown throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding region.

Dr. Bender graduated from the Johns Hopkins University and earned his medical doctorate from the University of Maryland prior to specializing in general surgery. He completed his internship and residency programs in general surgery at the Johns Hopkins University and Wayne State University prior to joining the United States Navy with the rank of captain.

Dr. Bender served our military at installations throughout the world, including serving as the director of trauma and surgical critical care at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, during Operation Desert Storm. He continues to serve our country in the Navy Individual Ready Reserve.

As the author of 61 peer-reviewed journal articles, one medical textbook and a contributor to 22 medical texts, Dr. Bender has a proli􀁹c background in treating, researching and teaching fellow physicians in a variety of medical procedures and conditions. He has served as a clinical professor and surgeon at Wayne State University, the Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Oklahoma, as well as participated in numerous professional medical organizations. He currently serves as the governor for the Oklahoma chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
