atv, ride safe

ATV Ride Safe Oklahoma is an initiative by the OU Medicine Trauma One Center, The Children's Center, The Oklahoma State Department of Health, Injury Prevention Services; and, OSU 4-H youth development. Our goal is to decrease the incidence of injuries and fatalities from ATV use, increase the awareness of ATV safety guidelines and provide riders ATV safety courses.

In 2015, 15 Oklahomans died as a result of ATV-related injuries. It is our hope that through our educational efforts, more Oklahomans will Ride Safe.

Your Family and ATV Safety
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids younger than 16 not ride ATVs. Whatever your family decides, please consider the following recommendations:

  • Attend an ATV safety and rider's course  – A hands-on class is recommended for ALL family members who ride.
  • Directly supervise young riders – Parents or other adults need to be present when children under age 16 are riding.
  • Control the keys – Keep the ATV key under lock until parents or other adults can supervise use.
  • Set house rules – Parents or other adults should set an example for safe operations of ATVs.

Safety Gear

  • Goggles – Protect the eyes and face from dirt and debris
  • Helmet – Protect head and brain from serious or deadly injury
  • Long-sleeved shirt – Protect arms and body from serious cuts
  • Long pants – Protect legs from serious cuts and scrapes
  • Gloves – Help maintain a tight grip while steering
  • Over the ankle boots – Protect the feet and ankles
