Public Reporting of Hospital Quality Indicators

OU Medical Center fully supports public reporting of quality of care and safety in U.S. hospitals. We believe that the public benefits when it is able to directly compare hospitals on the basis of quality measurements.

A new website, www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov, will provide information on hospital compliance with 10 measures related to treatment of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. The data shown is a snapshot in time, a first pass at measuring quality within hospitals. As the data available grows over time, and results can be compared, this information will become much more useful.

At OU Medical Center, we have multidisciplinary teams, including doctors, nurses and other health care professions, working to continuously improve hospital quality and patient safety.  We all share in the ratings, and share in the responsibility for continuous improvement.  Providing health care is a team effort, involving patients, families, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel.

OU Medical Center has implemented a number of patient safety initiatives and improvements to the standard of care including:

  • eMAR (bar code technology to insure accuracy in medication administration)

  • CPCS (Clinical Patient Care System or electronic medical record system integrating all clinical areas within the hospital)

  • Advanced cardiac technology

  • Implementation of ePOM (electronic Physician Order Management system)

  • OU Medical Center has been selected as one of only 21 hospitals in the HCA system to be examined as a Cardiac Center of Excellence

  • Performance Improvement teams, composed of doctors, nurses, hospital leadership and other health care professionals, are at work to improve:

    • Communications

    • Medication management

    • Health Failure

    • Acute Myocardial Infarction

    • Pneumonia

    • Stroke

These are just a few of the initiatives reflecting the commitment of OU Medical Center to the continuous improvement of our patient safety and quality of care.
