Seizures are episodes in which brain cells (neurons) fire excessively and inappropriately, manifested by temporary episodes of staring, uncontrollable shaking of arms and/or legs, loss of consciousness, and other types of unusual behavior.  Epilepsy refers to a condition in which a patient is prone to having recurrent seizures.
