Referring Physicians - Emergency General Surgery

Emergency General Surgery (EGS) is a developing field of surgery that has taken the principles of trauma care, including organized teams available 24/7, evidence-based processes and procedures, and continuous focus on quality improvement, and applied them to patients with other emergent/urgent surgical conditions. The University of Oklahoma is uniquely suited to provide quality care for the EGS patient. As the state's only Level One Trauma Center, there is immediate access to board-certified general surgeon/critical care physician, surgical intensive care unit, multi-disciplinary physicians, and immediate operating room availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Originally applied to the care of the trauma patient, the immediate availability of intensive medical resources is applied to the care of the patient with an EGS condition. The EGS service provides a full range of services to patients who are critically ill with acute surgical emergencies, sepsis, shock, respiratory failure and multisystem organ failure. Recent reports have indicated that approximately 10% of all hospital admissions are secondary to an EGS issue, an increase of more than 30% over the past 10 years. In addition, it has been shown that patients cared for by a dedicated EGS service improves patient outcomes. At the University of Oklahoma our EGS service and dedicated surgical team provides expedient care for patients in Oklahoma and surrounding states for the evaluation and treatment of severe skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, perforation of stomach or intestines, intestinal obstructions, infection of gallbladder, pancreas, appendix, intestines, and incarcerated hernias.
