About our Care

The OU Medicine Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program uses a multidisciplinary approach to support you in your weight loss journey. As an academic clinic which participates in collaborative research across the University of Oklahoma, we strive to provide the highest quality of care with methods that have been proven effective.

Our clinic combines experts with a variety of medical backgrounds to provide you with comprehensive care and education as you begin the weight loss program. Bariatric surgery is not a “quick fix,” but is a powerful and important tool to help you lose weight successfully and keep it off long-term. All patients are required to meet with our team for in-depth medical, nutritional, psychological, and physical therapy evaluations. We will create a treatment plan that is tailored just for you to safely and effectively progress toward surgery.

Laura Fischer MD, MS, Medical Director, is a board-certified surgeon who is fellowship trained in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. She is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Joining her in clinic are medical professionals specializing in the treatment of morbid obesity, diabetes, nutrition, behavioral health, exercise physiology, and post-operative care. Our program coordinator will ensure that all aspects of care are carefully addressed throughout your time in our program.

The OU Medicine Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program offers two primary types of bariatric surgery – the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Sleeve Gastrectomy. Surgery is performed using the laparoscopic technique with small incisions to lessen pain, speed healing, and reduce the risk of infection. Dr. Fischer also specializes in complex bariatric revisions for patients who have had complications from prior procedures.

Before surgery is scheduled, we will work with you to complete the necessary testing and education required to complete the program, including:

  • Attend one of our free Bariatric Surgery Information Seminars
  • Get pre-approval from your insurance provider – OR – speak with one of our financial services specialists to discuss income-based self-pay options
  • Work with our weight loss team on diet and exercise changes
  • Undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation with our Bariatric Nurse Practitioner

Find out more about bariatric surgery and how our program works at one of our Information Seminars. These are held twice a month at no cost to attendees and are open to everyone. Family and friends are welcome to join. Call (405)271-9448 to register for an upcoming session.
