What is the CSETC?

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine's Clinical Skills Education & Testing Center (CSETC) is a medical teaching facility dedicated to enhancing clinical training in an educational environment that promotes excellence in teaching and learning.

Why do students need the CSETC?

Traditional medical education often does not provide students the hands-on practice necessary to develop advanced skills. In the CSETC, students can experience clinical events in a controlled setting, and even the most complex skills can be practiced until perfected without risk to human patients.

What makes the CSETC different from traditional medical training?

The new CSETC uses innovative technologies and programs to enhance the skills of students and improve care of patients in the community. While classroom learning is essential to an effective, high-quality medical program, realistic experience-based learning, like students receive at the CSETC, plays a vital role in developing solid clinical and critical thinking skills. Faculty and students work together in a safe, controlled and realistic medical environment that includes both human- and computer-simulated experiences.

The CSETC helps students build confidence as they learn to interview, diagnose and treat patients. By combining clinical learning with Standardized Patients (SPs) and sophisticated human simulators, the CSETC significantly increases the amount of practice that students receive before they move on to work with real patients in a clinical setting, thus enhancing learning while ensuring patient safety.

With its state-of-the-art medical simulation software, web accessible video monitoring and clinical case management capabilities, the CSETC offers its students an unparalleled medical educational experience, preparing the professionals who will shape the future of health care delivery.

What programs does the CSETC offer?

The CSETC's educational programs span the four-year medical school curriculum and the post-graduate training years. They focus on:

  • Physical Examination Skills

  • Medical Interviewing

  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Clinical Decision Making

  • Procedural Skills

  • Crisis Resource Management

  • Patient Safety

  • Team Building Skills

  • Basic Surgical Skills

  • Advanced Laparoscopic Surgical Skills

All of the CSETC's programs are designed to build clinical knowledge and skills, to apply information and technology to support learning, to improve practice and competent care, to foster professional integrity, and ultimately to improve the health outcomes of patients, families and communities.
