Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Services

Many children may require the services of a rehabilitation therapist during their stay at Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center. Our Department of Rehabilitation Services consists of the regions finest pediatric therapy team including physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists.  We collaborate with the medical team to achieve improvements in physical performance, daily living skills and communication.  Whether one has performance concerns in one or multiple aspect of development and life skills, our team of therapists will work with patients, families and other support systems to foster healing, growth and independence through direct treatment and education.  Our mission is our promise to meet your expectations of the highest quality in patient care.

Our Staff 

Our clinicians are wholly dedicated to the advancement of treatment to the children who need their services by participating in research and investing in their continuing education. Each clinician holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate in their respective physical, occupational or speech language pathology fields, and are licensed through the State Board of Medical Licensure to practice in the state of Oklahoma. Advanced certifications include a Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, Mobility specialist, Interactive Metronome Certification, and a Certified Car Seat Technician.  

Our Services

Upon your doctor’s referral, our staff will provide an evaluation of your child and listen to your concerns and questions. Together, you and your therapists will develop goals and a customized treatment plan of selective interventions that are evidence based practices.  A part of every treatment plan is to provide training to you, the caregivers in support of ongoing care, education in the healing process and instructions on future management needs to prepare both the patient and the family for discharge planning. Treatment services provided by the department’s staff may include:

  • Wound care/burn care
  • Positioning/Splinting
  • Compression therapies
  • Mobilization/Ambulation
  • Strengthening/Endurance training
  • Balance and coordination skills
  • Manual therapies
  • Modalities for healing/pain management
  • Therapeutic play
  • Training in use of adaptive and mobility equipment
  • Feeding skills development
  • Communication and cognitive training
  • Treatment for cleft palate

Our therapists will keep you informed of your loved ones progress and adjust the plan should it be necessary for the best outcome.  Daily operations are Monday through Sunday from 8 to 5 PM each day. If you need to contact your therapist during the day, talk to your nurse who can locate your therapist for you.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

Children needing further therapy services after their inpatient stay can receive outpatient care right here at our Children’s Rehabilitation Services Department. We take care of children who experience sports injuries and other orthopedic injuries, burns or other wounds needing gentle care, and children who from accident or disease experience weakness and disabilities or are developmentally delayed. We can also assist your connections to suppliers of mobility and daily living equipment needs. Children receive evaluations and treatment planning with the whole family’s participation.  Currently, services offered on an outpatient basis include physical therapy, occupational therapy and dysphagiagrams by speech language pathologists.

Our department is conveniently located just off the main entrance to Children’s Hospital.  All patients must have a referral for therapy from their doctor to initiate outpatient services. Call us if your doctor gives you a referral for outpatient therapy.  Referrals can also be faxed to our registrar from the doctor’s office. We want to make your
