OKC’s FREE ACTIVE-FAMILY MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BACK SEPT. 17

OKLAHOMA CITY — It’s nearly time to wop, bop, boom and boogie again at the fifth annual Wiggle Out Loud – Oklahoma City’s free, active-family outdoor music festival presented by The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center and benefiting The Children’s Hospital Volunteers.

The festival returns this year from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at The Myriad Botanical Gardens Great Lawn, 301 W Reno Ave.

Last year’s festival was the busiest and most rockin’ Wiggle ever, and this year’s festival promises even more fun, music and healthy food and activities, with featured musical acts like songstress Sarah Lee Guthrie – granddaughter of Woody Guthrie – and Latin Grammy winner Lucky Diaz. Festival favorites returning this year include Oklahoma’s “kindie” superstars, Sugar Free Allstars, as well as Lucas Ross, Alegria Real and Adam & Kizzie.

“It’s hard to believe this little festival we started as a group of volunteers is turning 5 this year,” said Chris Wiser, member of the Sugar Free Allstars and one of the original Wiggle Out Loud founders. “I’m so proud of how it’s grown and developed into an important community event that bonds families together, and it’s exciting and extremely appropriate that Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie, is this year’s headliner.”

The Great Lawn Band Shell will feature an upbeat and family-friendly soundtrack for a variety of healthy activities spanning the park, including face painting, a giant fun zone with oversized lawn games, interactive arts and hoppy horse races.

Healthy food truck options also will be on-hand so festivalgoers can replenish their energy and keep wigglin’.

Sara Jacobson, director of The Children’s Hospital Volunteers, said she hopes the music and activities this year reach even more children and families. Last year, nearly 7,000 kids and families came out to the festival.

“I love the lineup for Wiggle this year; Sarah Lee Guthrie, Lucky Diaz and everyone else, there is so much diversity. I hope we can connect to new and different parts of the community and make some new friends,” she said.

Jacobson said the goal of Wiggle Out Loud is to get kids of all ages movin’ and groovin’ their way to healthier lives. But so much of what Wiggle does also helps patients at The Children’s Hospital who can’t make it to the festival.

“Thanks to Wiggle Out Loud, we’ve grown creative arts programs for our patients and families. Our kids are seeing live music by amazing local performers almost every week. Art engages and inspires. Wiggle Out Loud has given us new ways to affect the lives of our kids and families. I think it’s just the start,” she said.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit growing the festival and The Children’s Hospital Volunteers. Their programs encourage patients at Children’s to play, get moving, express themselves creatively, socialize, learn, enjoy music and art, laugh and do all they can to focus on being a kid and not being in the hospital.
