Information for News Media

OU Medicine enjoys a positive relationship with members of media. We welcome the opportunity to work with reporters. To help accommodate requests for information and interviews, we have established the following guidelines:

  1. To ensure patient privacy, confidentiality and appropriate sensitivity to all patients and families, reporters, film crews and photographers must be accompanied by a public relations representative while inside OU Medical Center, The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, OU Medical Center Edmond, OU Physicians clinics and The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. We follow American Hospital Association recommendations in meeting patient privacy guidelines contained in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

  2. Advance notice of on-site interviews and photographs is necessary so appropriate arrangements can be made. Media cannot enter hospitals or our campuses without first contacting a public relations/affairs or marketing representative.

    Patient Conditions

If you are a reporter looking for a condition report on a patient you must have the patient’s full name to request information.

We can only provide a one-word description of the patient’s condition. This includes “undetermined,” “good,” “fair,” “serious,” “critical,””deceased” and “discharged.”

For descriptions of these conditions as well as federal regulations hospitals must follow in releasing patient information, please click here.

Federal law allows patients to opt out of being listed in a hospital’s directory. In this situation, information about the patient will not be available, including confirmation of whether he or she is being treated here. Other public service entities such as police or fire officials may say that a patient was brought to OU Medical Center or The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center. However, this doesn’t release the hospital of its privacy obligations, and we still will not be able legally to share information about that patient.

In the event of a large-scale disaster, we will attempt to provide information about numbers of patients and general descriptions of types of injuries. Please keep checking back at this website as well as following our social media sites for the most up-to-date information.
