About the Center

Our Center of Excellence is your best source for quick, safe, and effective care for simple or complex recurring hernias, acid reflux and issues of the gallbladder, spleen, and adrenal glands. We also offer bariatric surgery options. In most cases, bariatric surgery can be done using minimally invasive procedures.

Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and hernia operations are some of the most common surgical procedures performed today. Our Center of Excellence was established to provide these types of surgeries following a model proven to reduce recurrence rates following incisional hernia repair from 50 percent to less than 5 percent. This means far fewer situations where additional procedures are required, allowing patients to return to normal daily activity much more effectively.

What is a Hernia?

There are many types of hernias, and they can have debilitating effects on people of all ages. They are caused when part of the abdominal wall, the sheet of muscle and tendons that holds organs in place, has a small tear or opening and a portion of the intestines pushes through and becomes stuck between the abdominal wall and the skin.

Many hernias do not cause pain, which can cause some people to put off treatment. However, when hernias are allowed to persist, a condition called “incarcerated hernia” can occur. This can trigger sharp pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, constipation and a hot sensation in the skin around the hernia. A hernia at this stage requires emergency surgery, so it is imperative to address a hernia early.

The only available hernia treatment is surgical repair to rebuild the abdominal wall. Surgery may be performed either as an “open” surgery, requiring larger incisions, or laparoscopically, which uses much smaller incisions.
