It takes a unique group of individuals to volunteer - people who are willing to give of themselves and their time to benefit the lives of others.

At OU Medical Center Edmond, our members come from all walks of life and are valued members of our medical team. Their responsibilities range from transporting patients and delivering flowers to providing directions.

Our History
OU Medical Center Edmond is celebrating 50 years of volunteering in 2017! The OU Medical Center Edmond Auxiliary was organized in 1967 with 56 charter members. The organization was developed with the purpose of cultivating friendly relations and promoting mutual understanding between the patients and hospital staff.

Application Guidelines
All potential volunteers must complete an application, background check, drug screening, and health screening prior to being selected as a volunteer. The hospital will coordinate the screenings and background check at no cost to the potential volunteer.

Shift Selection

Shifts are four hours in length. It is the expectation that the volunteer works the same four hour shift each week as hospital staff, patients, and guests depend on the volunteer to help the hospital run smoothly. The volunteer coordinator will make every effort to place the volunteer in the shift of his or her choosing based on position availability.

All volunteers must complete orientation on hospital guidelines, procedures, and safety issues. Additional on-the-job training is furnished in related volunteer areas.

An active membership is 50 hours of service annually.

Volunteers may purchase a pink top from the gift shop for $20 or purchase their own pink or white top to wear while volunteering at a local uniform shop. A pink or white button down or golf shirt is also acceptable. Volunteers are expected to provide their own white, khaki, or black skirt or slacks and comfortable, closed – toe shoes. Each volunteer will be issued an identification badge that must be worn throughout their shift.

Volunteers are eligible for one free meal during a four-hour shift. The volunteer must be in uniform and wearing their hospital identification badge.

Training for each area of service is provided to the volunteer by the volunteer coordinator, hospital staff, or another volunteer.

Volunteers can park in the employee parking lot west of the hospital.

Areas of Service

Information Desk
Volunteers greet visitors, answer phones, and perform other duties as needed. Information desk volunteers also assist registration; deliver flowers and mail, transport patients and/or escort visitors to appropriate areas.

Gift Shop
Through good customer service, volunteers sell merchandise and assist with pricing and displaying of items. The gift shop is the primary fundraiser for the auxiliary.

Outpatient Surgery
This early morning shift requires volunteers to assist staff as needed with errands, assisting with patient discharge, preparing coffee and updating family on patient status.

Autumn Life
This volunteer position assists staff with patients assigned to the senior behavioral health area. Due to the nature of patients in this unit, volunteers must undergo additional training and volunteers must be pursuing a clinical degree to participate.

Blood Pressure Screening
Volunteers take complimentary blood pressure readings on Monday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. in the hospital main waiting area.  The volunteers use an automated machine and record the customer's reading.
