Child Study Center

Get help for your child or young loved one who lives with developmental, educational, behavioral or medical needs from developmental and behavioral pediatrics specialists at the Child Study Center.

Take advantage of expert evaluation, including individual and interdisciplinary assessment, as well as inpatient or outpatient consultation, treatment and clinical services such as:

  • A Better Chance – Helps infants and children exposed to drugs and/or alcohol before birth
  • Developmental/behavioral consultation – Offers services to assist SoonerCare providers with referrals and resources
  • Individual therapy and assessment – Provides evaluation and therapy for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or another serious trauma or loss
  • JumpStart Developmental Program – Helps families and care providers understand developmental and behavioral strengths and challenges faced by young children thought to have developmental delays
  • Neuropsychology program – Provides services to children and adolescents with known or suspected neurological disorders, as well as those with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, Asperger's, dyslexia, severe communication disorders or others
  • Oklahoma Autism Center (OAC) – Uses evidence-based practices to assist local school districts with implementation of community-based, sustainable, cost-effective programs for children with disabilities, including Early Access, Early Foundations, MESA Project and research activities
  • Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) – Short-term, specialized behavior management program designed for young children experiencing behavioral and/or emotional difficulties and their families
  • Sooner SUCCESS – Serves families and providers who care for a child from birth to age 21 with special needs, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional/behavioral Issues, developmental delays/disabilities, learning disabilities, abuse or neglect
  • Clinical research – Provides new or most current medical treatments for children who may have a neurodevelopmental or behavioral condition such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability (LD), fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, autism or other issues

Center on Child Abuse & Neglect

The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (CCAN), established at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1992, organizes the Health Science Center’s efforts in treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. CCAN directs research, program administration, clinical services, professional education (including an interdisciplinary training program for medical students), program development, and public education in the field of child maltreatment.

Through several ongoing programs, the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect provides outpatient psychological services to children, adolescents and families, including assessment and treatment services for children who have experienced abuse or neglect, children at high risk for abuse or neglect, adolescents with problematic sexual behavior and children who have been exposed to trauma. In addition, victims of child abuse and neglect, as well as their caregivers and/or siblings can receive services.

Your Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics Team

As part of your OU Health developmental and behavioral pediatrics care team, you and your child may work with a highly skilled group of children’s specialists, including board-certified developmental and behavioral pediatricians, child and adolescent psychologists, speech pathologists, clinical social workers, professional counselors, occupational therapists, nurse practitioners and child development specialists.

Beyond their therapeutic work with you and your child, these dedicated experts help train the next generation of behavioral health professionals who will continue to care for your children and family. Your doctor, therapists and other team members also participate in extensive research on important issues such as the effects of fetal drug and alcohol exposure, emotional trauma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders so they can bring the most innovative and advanced treatment options to their care for your child’s particular condition.
