Curriculum

Resident Rotation - Year 1

Rot. 1 - Dosimetric systems, Daily, Monthly quality assurance on the linear accelerators

Rot. 2 - External beam treatment planning and Record and Verification. A continuity of treatment planning prevails throughout the program (Rot 2 – Rot 8)

Rot. 3 – Linear accelerator acceptance and/or Commission and patient IMRT quality assurance measurements

Rot. 4 - High Dose Rate (HDR) and Low Dose Rate (LDR) brachytherapy treatment planning, quality assurance and other supports. A continuity of brachytherapy treatment planning prevails throughout the program (Rot 4 – Rot 8)

Resident Rotation - Year 2

Rot. 5 - Special Procedures: TBI, 4DCT planning, respiratory gating, IGRT, TSE, and other practical applications of clinical situations

Rot. 6 - Special Procedures: Stereotactic Radio Surgery (SRS) with Gamma Knife and Linac based system

Rot. 7 - Radiation Protection, Survey, Shielding

Rot. 8 - Proton therapy

Clinical Research

Research training is not explicitly offered as part of this two-year clinical residency. However, physics/clinical radiation oncology research projects will be available as part of the clinical rotations.

Didactic Training

Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of the program. The resident participates in the following:

  • Journal club seminar at the Department of Radiation Oncology
  • Journal club seminar at the Graduate Medical Physics Program
  • Radiation Oncology Chart Rounds
  • Medical Physics and Dosimetry meetings

The following graduate level courses, which are offered in our CAMPEP approved graduate medical physics program, are required (if the resident has already taken any of the courses mentioned below before joining the program, he/she will get a waiver following submission of sufficient proof to the Director of the program):

  • Physics of Radiation Therapy
  • Introduction to Radiation Biology
  • Production and Absorption of Ionizing Radiation
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Radiation Measurements
