Program Structure

Intern Year: 

All pre-urology training occurs with both the urology service and general surgery services ​with rotations occurring at the Presbyterian Adult Hospital, Childrens Hospital, and Veterans Affairs Hospital. We have 4  consecutive months of Urology training during the intern year to foster early introduction to both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • 8 mo - General Surgery
  • 4 mo - All Adult Urology Services

Urology 1: 

The Urology 1 resident develops skills in outpatient procedures such as: cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, and vasectomy.  He/she also gains proficiency in minor surgical and endourologic procedures on their respective rotation.  Emphasis on inpatient and outpatient management is continued with increasing responsibility.  
  • 4 mo - Adult Urologic Oncology Service
  • 4 mo - Adult General Urology, Endourology, Male/Female Reconstructive Urology, Infertility Service
  • 4 mo - Veterans Affairs Hospital 

Urology 2: 

The Urology 2 resident ​gains early robotic and laparoscopic surgery skills, exposure to major open surgical cases, and advanced endourologic skills.  He/she also gains in-depth exposure to pediatric urology in the clinic and inpatient/outpatient surgical setting.

  • 4 mo - Adult General Urology, Endourology, Male/Female Reconstructive Urology, Infertility Service
  • 4 mo - Children's Hospital 

Urology 3: 

The Urology 3 develops leadership roles as the acting chief of the Children's Hospital. He/she has increasing levels of autonomy with general urology, infertility, and male/female reconstructive surgery.

  • 4 mo - Adult Urologic Oncology Services

Urology 4 (Chief Year): 

The Urology 4 (Chief Year) further develops leadership roles as the acting chief of all adult urology services & VA Hospital. He/she has increasing levels of autonomy with major open, laparoscopic, and robotic cases as well as complete oversight of the resident-run Urology clinic.
